To The Capitol…by Private Car

The Chapter’s Trip to Washington DC

The St. Louis Chapter NRHS ran a private car trip to the nation’s capitol June 6-13, 2007 using the sleeping car Cimarron River.  Sixteen people made the trip that included 2˝ days of sightseeing in Washington as well as free time in Chicago.

The weather was sunny and unseasonably hot but the scenery spectacular as we rode Amtrak’s eastbound Cardinal along the Ohio River and across West Virginia and Virginia.  The weather was much more comfortable for our passengers as the visited the sights around the capitol.  Access to the city’s famed historical landmarks was excellent as our “hotel”, the Cimarron River, stayed Union Station the whole time.

After our Monday afternoon departure, the trip on the Capitol Limited up the scenic Potomac River Valley made for a nice closure to our time in Washington.

The trip was extended a day as Amtrak would not let us leave Chicago for St. Louis on the same day we arrived there.  Thus passengers had one more day to roam the Windy City.

The chapter will be repeating this trip in 2008.  It is tentatively planned for June 4-11.  Details will be forthcoming.

Our private car, Cimarron River, was parked in Washington Union Station, giving us great access to the downtown area.
